Distributed Buoyancy Module Systems
Matrix designed and manufactured distributed buoyancy modules are used to support umbilicals, hoses, cables and flexible risers in offshore floating production environments. Typically used to provide uplift and reduce topside or tension loads, buoyancy modules enable stable geometric configurations to be achieved, preventing system overutilisation.
Matrix distributed buoyancy can be used in range of applications and is comprised of three elements:
- A sophisticated and highly adaptable, compliant internal clamp which connects the buoyancy module to the riser
- A pair of buoyancy elements constructed of composite syntactic foam and skinned with glass reinforced plastic or polyethylene.
- Two outer securing straps.
Designed and developed in compliance with API 17L, Matrix distributed buoyancy modules can be attached to a range of diameters – 200 to 600 mm – and operated in a variety depths down to 4000msw.
TECHNICAL DESIGN & ENGINEERING
Matrix’s patented multi-segmented, bandolier internal clamp system provides approximately 80% coverage around the pipe’s circumference. The result of which, is an evenly distributed pressure across the flexible, thus maximising the contact area to provide increased slip resistance.

BUOYANCY MODULE ELEMENT
Matrix’s buoyancy module element is lightweight and robust, and is delivered in two parts with a moulded internal recess. The internal clamp fits into the recess to ensure the buoyancy elements are securely mounted on the riser.
The module element encapsulates composite macrospheres and microspheres which is bound together using an epoxy resin binder forming a composite syntactic foam material.
Matrix syntactic foam is available in a range of densities – premium, ultralight, hybrid and standard – and skin options – glass reinforced plastic or polyethylene and combinations to suit operational requirements. One combination of note is Matrix’s ultralight foam and glass reinforced skin which has maximises the operational envelope of the module or minimises the drag envelope depending on the module size chosen. OUTER SECURING STRAPS
Once fitted, the buoyancy modules are secured to the riser by way of two outer Aramid straps and corrosion resistant (CRA) tensioning devices. Tensioning bolts are easily tensioned using standard hand tools or pneumatic equipment.
INSTALLATION CONFIGURATIONS & TIMES
Matrix distributed buoyancy modules can be installed horizontally and vertically, providing enhanced installation flexibility and vessel options.
Simple and lightweight installation tooling is provided with each buoyancy module to minimise installation times and increase safety. The impact on installation times is tremendous, with a Matrix distributed module installed under five minutes. Vessel time is reduced, leading to a significant reduction in the total cost of ownership of Matrix distributed buoyancy modules.
